The Truth Will Set You Free
INTRODUCTION
What is The Truth?
First, consider who is making this statement.
Jesus Christ is King of the Kingdom of God, in heaven, in the universe and on earth. In Matthew 28 Jesus tells us that “all power and authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”.
Hebrews 1:1-3 instructs us that “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
Second: As such, it is also impossible for Jesus to lie.
“People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…” Hebrews 6:16-19.
Third, what does it mean to hold to Christ’s Teachings?
“Hold to” means to “refuse to abandon or change a principle or opinion; to adhere to a commandment or teaching, to do what you have promised or decided, or to stick to; continue having a particular belief or standard by doing it.” Macmillan dictionary. It means to “cling to something.” Merriam Webster dictionary.
Therefore, Christ is saying that it is not enough to just know His teaching. When you adhere to and cling to His teaching and commandments, your actions and commitment demonstrate to Him that you are a believer, a disciple (“a follower or student of a specific teacher, leader, or philosopher,”) as opposed to other teachers or leaders.
Fourth, He will reveal the Truth (reality) to you as you read the Bible and apply it.
If you “hold to” His teachings, you demonstrate your believe in them and in Him. Christ is “the truth,” John 14:6. He sets you free and then enlightens the eyes of your heart and mind with a conviction of the reality of His teachings and His power. God the Father, in His time, deepens your faith. Once you really understand who Christ is and who who you are “in Christ”, that understanding and your daily faith in Christ keeps you at peace and free of all kinds of fear and temptations!
This is a process, not an event. I have found this process to be a series of events. Each event deepens your understanding and faith, which results in your growth of spiritual maturity.
Fifth, When Jesus uses the word “truth” in the Bible, it means reality.
The “Critical Success Factors” in the April issue of BobChats explains that the word truth, when Christ uses it, in the Greek means “reality.” See Blog at CCBAlliance.org. When Christ was standing before Pilot, He said “It is for this reason I came into the world and this reason I was born, to testify to the truth.” He goes on to say “Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” John 18:37. Are you on the side of truth?
Sixth: If you hold to His teaching, Jesus will set you free:
- From the sin nature and its addictions,
- From Satan, his forces of evil and his lies.
- From fear, that is, all fear that may be controlling your life.
Seventh: You walk in His protection and Live in his blessings. Everything Jesus says is the truth (reality). He can not lie. If you don’t have a Bible, buy a red letter Bible in which everything Christ says is in red.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”
That is the end of the article. However, if you are interested, following are 50 verses where He specifically alerts us to understand.
