Why Did Christ Come to Earth Series

TO SET THE CAPTIVES FREE

By Bob Benson, President/CEO CCBA

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A Prophecy in Isaiah Concerning Christ’s Birth

Good Timing For This Article

“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind [can’t see the truth], to free captives from prison [bondage] and to release from the dungeon [Satan] those who sit in darkness [an involvement of lies].”

Isaiah 42:6-7 NIV

“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

2 Peter 1 20-21 NIV

In David Seamands’ books and tapes on Healing for Damaged Emotions, he explains that infirmity is not a sin. It is a weakness that makes a person more susceptible to sin.

PART V is packed with real-world insights to set you free from the “old nature” and any power or infirmity that is holding you captive and keeping you from experiencing the full life Christ refers to below.

Jesus Christ Loves You and Has Total Power and Authority in Heaven and on Earth to Set You Free from Bondage and Fear!

The objective of these articles comes from a key reason Christ said He came to earth, “A thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so they may have life. I want them to have it in the fullest possible way.” John 10:10 NIRV.

Brief Recap to Date

If you have not read Parts I – IV, I recommend you read the Articles at CCBAlliance.org >Resources >Blog. Following is a brief recap.

Part I: The Anchor for Your Soul presented scientific evidence from an astrophysicist in Lee Strobel’s book, The Case for Miracles. The evidence concludes that “the Universe had to be created by an intelligent and creative higher power from outside of the Universe.”

Key Reality – There is a God. He loves you and wants to bless you!

Part II: Jesus Christ, Undercover Boss.

Key Realities

Christ came to earth and gave His life on the cross for you. Part II notes that, in the beginning, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin entered their bodies. “Sin” here is a noun, not a verb, something living in your body. Sin is passed from generation to generation and resulted in dysfunctional humanity and a world population influenced by Satan and his forces of darkness. Christ paid the penalty for our sins and provided ways for us to live life on earth with a new sinless nature. We can experience life as God originally intended – in freedom from the bondage of the sinful nature and from the forces of darkness and their power and lies. If you think Satan is not real or not affecting your life, you are already in bondage to him.

Part III: Jesus Christ came to bear witness to the truth and set you free.

Key Realities

Then Pilate said to Him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’”

John 18:37 ESV

In Strong’s Concordance, the meaning of alétheia: truth is summarized: “In ancient Greek culture, 225 (alḗtheia) was synonymous for “reality as the opposite of illusion, i.e. fact.” Christ came to define reality and the Bible instructs us to renew our minds with truth (reality).

If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth [reality], and the truth [reality] will set you free.”

John 8:31-32 NIV

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

John 1:12-13

Part IV: Jesus Christ came to give you a New Nature.

Key Realities

You don’t have to live as a captive to the sinful nature. Christ came to give you a new nature. When you invite Christ into your life, you receive(d) that “new nature,” and you become a “new creation in Christ.” However, you need to learn how to live in it and stop being controlled by the old sinful nature. Allowing Christ to be your Lord and live in you daily keeps the old nature dead.

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self [old nature], which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self [the new nature], created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Ephesians 4:20-24 NIV

What are you doing with these game-changing realities?

PART V

CHRIST CAME TO SET THE CAPTIVES FREE

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:1

You make choices every day that impact your health, emotions, protection, relationships, success, and general well-being! Some of these choices have a greater impact on your life than others! And yes, it also affects what happens when you die. One doesn’t have to dwell on that reality, but it is wise to define reality and plan for it! You don’t believe in God? Good luck with that. There is a mountain of evidence that God exists.

WHO ARE THE CAPTIVES?

Key Realities

You are, unless Christ has set you free and you know how to walk in the leading of God’s Spirit and His power. Christ lived on earth and Hebrews 2 says, “He had to be made like His brothers in every way, in order that He might become…merciful…” Therefore, Christ’s teachings are practical, and “He is able to help those who are being tempted.”

For example, at one time in my Christian walk, I was being held captive by an infirmity. Which infirmity it was doesn’t matter. They all have the potential to keep you from being free to live life in its fullness without guilt, destroying relations, or being deceptive with yourself, others and/or God (some infirmities are listed below). Everything was going well with my business and my relationships. I was on the board of one of the 10 fastest-growing churches in America and Chairman of the board of a large youth ministry. No one knew that I was in great emotional pain inside. Some of my behavior did not line up with Christ’s teachings, some of which I was blind to. I wanted to change, but I felt powerless to do so – even though I was praying and asking God to take the pain away.

I reached out to the Lord for help declaring “Lord, I don’t mean any disrespect but Christianity doesn’t seem to work. However, I know what I am reading in the Bible is true, so what is going on?” He instructed me to look up every verse in the Bible with the word “truth” in it. So I obeyed Him and looked them up. He began to teach me many things from Scripture. I make a decision to proactively live by Christ’s teaching in the Bible! Some seemed impossible so I made a decision to believe them, even if I didn’t understand them or think they were possible. Eventually, Christ used His truth and power to set me free and helped me realize that a lot of what I had learned in the world (including some in church) was not truth (reality). It became apparent that learning the truth and making changes is a lifelong process, not an event!

Many of the key truths that helped set me free are contained in these articles.

In What Ways Are People Captives?

General Realities

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed”

Luke 4:8

The “poor” in this passage are all those who are… poor in spirit (Matthew 5:3) and all the “miserable” and the afflicted (Isaiah 58:7). Our Savior preached to the poor as proof that he was the Messiah and was from God (Matthew 11:5). He gave comfort where it was needed and where it was received with gratitude. The poor “feel” their need for sources of comfort that the world cannot give…and there also, the gospel has shed its richest blessings and its purest joys. It is also one proof that the gospel is true. (Borrowed in part from Barn’s Commentary.)

Below are three major Key Realities of how people become captives:

1) The Sin Nature (Sin that lives in you as a result of the fall of mankind). See the recap above. Only Christ can set you free from sin and keep you free.

“…Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free? Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:31-35 NIV

“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. I have the right to do anything, you say—but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything—but I will not be mastered by anything.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-12 NIV

The Bible says sinning (actions that disobey God’s Commands) are punishable by physical and spiritual death. As you know, that’s why Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for your and my sins.

2) The influence of Satan and his forces of evil. They are masters at mixing truth and lies to lead you astray in bondage. Read my comment near the end of this article and Ephesians 6:10-18.

“The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.”

1 John 3:8 NIV

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

3) The influence of the world we live in. The world is currently under the control of Satan’s lies and power. Many lies have been programmed into the world’s system and your mind since the day you were born.

“The devil led Him [Christ] up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to Him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Luke 4:5-7 NIV

Specific Key Realities

Let’s examine some specific ways in which a person is or can be held captive by these three influences on us:

  • Love of Money & Wealth “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:9-11*
  • Addictions to drugs, food, sex, possessions, tobacco, alcohol, etc. “…For you are a slave to whatever controls you.” 2 Peter 2:19 NLT
  • Fear, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
  • Depression & Discouragement, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5 NIV (King David)
  • Anger, “For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.” Acts 8:23
  • Heartbreak, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 NIV “His attendants asked him, ‘Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!’ He answered, ‘While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, “Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.” But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.’” 2 Samuel 12:21-23 NIV (King David)
  • Obsession with Power, Success, or Fame, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2-3 NIV
  • Slavery & Oppression, “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:9-10 NIV
  • Lies & Deception, See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:8 NIV
  • Unforgiveness, Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15
  • Pride, including thinking you can do it without Christ. “Pride Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before the fall.” NIV Proverbs 16:18.

*There is a great misunderstanding of money and wealth in Christianity. The Bible does not say that money and wealth are bad, only that “the love of them” and putting your trust in them instead of God is wrong. If God wants you to have more money and wealth, He will bless you with it according to “the Promise” so that you can be a blessing to “the nations,” [people/people groups] and so you can be a good steward over people and the responsibilities He gives you. In that way, you can give the glory to Him and make His goodness known. See Deuteronomy 28, chapters 8 & 28-30, Galatians 3, and Hebrews 6.

How Does Christ Set The Captives Free?

Powerful Key Realities

How do we get that freedom? When you sincerely ask God for the forgiveness of your sins, thank Christ for coming to earth and dying to pay the penalty for your sins, and you receive Him into your life as Savior and Lord, you are “born again.” When that happens, you become a child of God, receive a new sinless nature and the power & teaching of the Spirit of truth!!! Then, I recommend you put your faith in Christ daily and obey (follow) His teaching daily to keep the old nature powerless and help you renew your mind with the truth. The following are reasons for my recommendation. The Bible speaks for itself.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body [of sin], I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Galatians 2:20

A) The Work and Power of Jesus Christ!

…Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him… Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” Psalm 16:8. Acts 2:22-24,36 NIV

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

Hebrews 1:3 NIV

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 2:5 NIV

Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason, He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because He himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.”

Hebrews 2:14-18 NIV

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet He did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidenceso that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Hebrews 4:14-16 NIV

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent Submission. Son though he was, He learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 5:7-10 NIV

So in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith,”

Galatians 3:26 NIV

How much power does Jesus have?

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.'”

Matthew 28:18

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

1 Peter 5:6-8 NIV

B) Your growth and Spiritual development come through the work of the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of truth) and his power. Not your power. You can’t do it yourself.

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘

Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

Zechariah 4:6

How Do You Sustain That Freedom?

A) Keep your eyes on Jesus! My father was a man of few words. He never gave me much advice. However, when I was discouraged by Christianity and Christian people, God gave me a piece of advice I never forgot. He simply said, “Keep your eyes on Jesus.” That became the principle that opened up my eyes to reality and the path to Spiritual growth and development on a consistent basis.

Remember, when you sincerely asked God for the forgiveness of your sins, thanked Christ for coming to earth to die to pay the penalty for your sins, and received Him to dwell in your life as Savior and Lord, you were “born again.” When that happened you became a child of God, and received a new sinless nature and the Spirit of truth!!!

It is Christ in you that makes and keeps the old sinful nature powerless and helps you renew your mind with the truth. Place your faith in Christ daily, demonstrating it through obedience to His teaching. When you do this, trusting Him to help you, His will, power, and the reality He teaches you sets you free from the captivity of any bondage, spiritual force of darkness, or world system you are faced with.

“My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments…So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority”

Colossians 2:2-10

B) Set your mind on what the Spirit desires. When you really want to get something done, what do you do? You may not even realize it, but you set a goal, or someone or something sets it for you, then you set your mind on getting it done! Christmas is coming up and your family is getting together on Christmas day. You set your mind on getting there. Travel plans are made. You set aside time to shop for presents. You start thinking about what you are going to wear and the people you are going to see. You get excited. Your mind is set on making it happen.

“Those who live according to the flesh [the old nature] have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.”

Romans 8:5-7

C) Stay focused on renewing your mind. As you grow up and go through life, you are indoctrinated with many lies, half-truths, and the world’s perception of reality instead of Christ’s teaching of reality. Most people, including Christian’s have no how much God is involved in their life and wants to be involved in their life. To learn the truth (reality), one has to be intentionally focused on renewing their mind.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:1-2

D) Ask the “Spirit of Truth” to counsel and guide you to the truth. To help you, Christ has sent the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth to guide and teach us the truth (reality). Just ask him for help and be persistent. Be patient. Sometimes it takes a while. You can ask him and the lord about anything, personal matters, family matters, business matters, people matters, health matters, spiritual matters, Bible passages, etc.

At one time I was having a difficult time with one of my sons, a strong-willed child. I asked the lord for help. I received a thought, “read 1 Corinthians 13 on love.” At the time I was using The Living Translation. One of the instructions in it was “love always… stands by your side.” So I decided to find a trustworthy way to do that in a meeting with him and the school principal. It worked! Our relationship began to improve and got even better as I set my mind on following the teachings on love in the Bible.

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:16-17, 15:25-27 NIV

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine.”

 John 16:12-15 NIV

E) “Hold to” (follow) Christ’s teachings. Trust Him and obey His commandments and teaching. You can’t win the battle with the old nature, Satan, and the world with your own power! You win it with God’s power!

“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.”

1 Peter 2:16 NIV

“So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

Zechariah 4:6 NIV

F) Read the Bible! Start with the New Testament. Block out time every week to read it.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”

2 Timothy 3:16 NIV

G) Pray! Prayer is simply talking to God or the Lord Jesus Christ. Do it anytime during the day that you want to give God the Father or the Lord Jesus Christ thanks, need their help, or would like their advice.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

Key Realities Concerning Evil Forces

There is a devil (Satan), he is Christ’s enemy and he will try everything he can to derail your progress with his “schemes.”

One of the upcoming articles will be on how to “take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” In short, you need to put on the Armor of God. Putting on the Armor of God is all about learning how to have faith in God and trust His power to fight the battles with the devil. Satan is a strategist and you can be sure that he is involved with any captivity or bondage you are facing. The battle with him is God’s, not yours. And your battle is with him, not people. Your only offensive weapon is prayer and The Sword of the Spirit, Scripture – the word of God written in the Bible.

Simply put, when you trust God, His Spirit, His Son, and verses from His Word (the Bible) enable you to fight and win the battles. You are working in their power. You fight by quoting scripture from the Bible in Jesus’ name to Satan (the devil) and his forces of darkness. Read the Bible and the Holy Spirit will teach you as you read it!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm…”

Ephesians 6:10-14 NIV

If you want to better understand the “full armor of God,” consider reading my book Stand Firm With God’s Power in Business. It is listed on Amazon. Or you can read the 1st addition of it free in the Resources at www.CCBAlliance.org.

Action Plan

Be Intentional About Living in Christ and Seeking the Truth

At that moment you invite Christ into your life, five very significant changes happen. And they are, to put it in the vernacular, a big deal! You are born into God’s family and you become one of His children!Christ enters your life and dwells in you through God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit.Your old sinful nature dies on the cross with Jesus, and you receive a new nature, made in the image of God. Your new nature has no “sin” living in it!You become a descendant of Abraham and an heir of the promise God made to him!You have access to powerful spiritual weapons to defeat Satan and his forces of darkness. You will need them because Satan is at war with Christ. Don’t worry, just learn how to use your spiritual weapons.

Like anything new, learning how to live in the new creation is a process, not an event. Until you learn the components of the process in this article and practice doing them regularly, you may find yourself living in the dilemma above. But do not be discouraged, the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, our counselor, will guide you and direct your steps. Just ask for forgiveness and ask them to help you each day. They are “with you.” Eventually the battle with your old nature will reduce greatly and you will find yourself living primarily in the new nature.

Some may be asking; how do I receive Christ into my life? You can easily do it by praying to Him. Following is an example. Begin by being honest with Christ and pray about what’s on your heart. Admit to Him that you have sinned against God and His law (the ten commandments). Thank Him for dying on the cross as payment for your sins, and invite Him into your life as your Savior. Receive him as the Lord of your life. Ask him to direct your steps, and to give you guidance, wisdom, and knowledge. Pray about anything else that is on your mind. Then read the Bible, asking Him and the Holy Spirit to guide you to the truth. Hold to His teaching. If you have not already done so, start with the New Testament.
